Website Strategy | How to Create a Successful Plan for Your Business Website
Getting a website designed for your business can be difficult but it doesn't have to be. As the saying goes, if you fail to plan then plan to fail. Like all planning it takes time to develop a website strategy and fine tune it into a successful website plan. Here are some questions to get you started with your website development plan.
- What is the purpose of your website?
- Who will use your website?
- What do you want them to do on your website?
- What content will your website need to get them to do what you want?
Spend about 10 to 15 minutes and write down the first thing that comes to your mind for each question. Don't worry about being perfect or very detailed at this point. Focus on good not great and create a short, sweet outline that can be used as a foundation to communicate with a professional website designer. One thing that is for certain is that your requirements will change and once you build your website you'll need to get real user feedback and evolve your site based on that real feedback. So create your short and sweet plan based on the 4 questions above and then do some competitive analysis.
Go to a few of your competitors websites and ask yourself these same questions from their point of view. Also think of how you will differentiate your business. What is your unique selling proposition? Why should someone choose you over the competition?
Next, crunch the numbers and set a realistic budget for your website. Put all of this information together in a 1 page document. You are now ready to interview web design companies. If you want to be taken seriously then you need to reveal your budget so you can figure out what companies are willing to work with you. You can find web designers for $5 to $500+ per hour. Don't be focused on price though, focus on finding the company that will provide you with the best return on your investment.
